Belly Button Rings Are A Popular Fashion Accessory

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Richard Davies A tattoo or piercing is a sign in modern society of style and individuality. As with anything, when it becomes fashionable a lot of people jump on the bandwagon and then it becomes less unique. So what are you doing to make your tattoo or piercing decision more original? Do you care? Are you happy to be one of many? The good news is that even if a piercing in terms of where it is located is common, the actual accessory can be very stylish and relatively unique. This brings me on to the subject I want to walk about which is belly button rings. Have you got one yet? A belly button ring I mean. These are now very popular. At one time it was a piercing that was few and far between but has now reached ‘critical mass’. There aren’t many that haven’t got one or considered having one, at least at some point. Also, really, lets be honest, it’s a female thing. Men and belly button rings don’t really go hand in hand. As with any piercing, you can be super stylish or you can make it look terrible. Please don’t be the latter. So, having firmly established that the belly button ring is firmly in the female domain of our species, lets also accept they are as common as back tattoos and tongue piercings. That much is a given. There is, however, something alluringly attractive about the naval if it is decorated tastefully, which is where the belly button ring comes into its own. If you choose the right belly button ring it will look exquisitely attractive. There are lots of belly button rings available to purchase, and there is a wide variety to be found at great prices out there in cyberspace so have a good look around for the right one. Belly button rings may not be ‘as’ unique as they were before they became so populare, but you can certainly add your own touch of style and flare to this type of naval adornment and I can’t see them going out of fashion anytime soon. The Advantages of Bill Consolidation Loans

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeanette_Pollock]Jeanette Pollock Many people nowadays are in debt. There is no denying that most things we acquire nowadays are gotten through debt. Some people find paying through credit cards more convenient than using cash. Still others find that the lure of acquiring material things is just too much to resist when you don’t have to pay for it yet. Some people though, experience emergencies when they have to pay for services they can’t afford yet. We depend on credit to get us through difficult times. Let’s face it: no one can claim to never to have used credit. It is a part of life. One thing that we also experience is the fact that we do not owe money to just one person. We can have debts from different institutions during our times. Each of these debts has its own interest rate. Some debts have high interest, some debts have low interest. Some debts have short life spans, while some debts can be paid off for years. Bill consolidation is when you unify all of these bills into one debt with one single interest rate. Most people nowadays make use of bill consolidation loans in order to achieve this. Bill consolidation loans means taking out a loan in order to pay off all of your other debts. This means turning your unsecured bills, into a secured loan. What are the advantages of bill consolidation loans? Well, here are some of those: 1. Time -in acquiring a bill consolidation loan, you get yourself a more sensible timeframe in which to pay off your debts. You extend your debt if you consider getting a bill consolidation loan. If, for example, a bill is overdue, and you are afraid the repossession people will come knocking at your door, getting a bill consolidation loan will gain you more time -time that you can use to get the money needed to pay off your bills. 2. Money -everyone knows about interest. Paying interest is like having to pay more because you can’t pay. Paying interest on a debt is like watching your money go up in flames. If you acquire a bill consolidation loan, you may end up with an interest rate much lower than the interest rate you pay on your original debt. This means you can save more money. In acquiring bill consolidation loans, you can save yourself the trouble of paying a huge interest on debts you know you cannot pay yet. 4. Assurance -in acquiring a bill consolidation loan, you need to secure that loan with collateral. Whether it is your house, car, or whatever possession, you can finally be at ease knowing that your debt is secured. This would allow the lending company to give you more time and more convenience. After all, they have your house in their hands, right? This gives you more time and the peace of mind you need to think your debts through. Do not be fooled, though. You are still in debt, albeit to another person. Some people think that in acquiring bill consolidation loans, they are free of their obligations. This is not the case. You still need to pay, as we all do someday. Hey, you did borrow, did you not? Probably the best advice anyone can give you is you should never spend more than you ought to. This would definitely save you the trouble of looking for bill consolidation loans. Jeanette Pollock is a freelance author and website owner of BillConsolidationHQ.com. Room Temperature Cold Processing Soap Making Method

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Shelley Fluegge When I first started researching soap making I found there were three ways of making soap. The easiest and least labor intense was melt and pour, this soap comes as a solid and is just heated up and becomes a liquid, you add in whatever you want to the soap, pour it in a mold and let it set up. Pretty simple but not what I was looking for. The other two methods were the actual process of creating soap from oils, water and sodium hydroxide. Hot process did not appeal to me, I didnt think standing over a stove cooking soap sounded like an enjoyable time so I began to focus on cold process soapmaking. Cold process soapmaking does not require any external heat as the name suggests. I read instructions that detailed the oil had to be 110F and the lye had to be 100, but the next bit of information I found stated each had to be 100, or 95, or one had to be 95 and the other 100 and others stated ‘warm to the touch’ Im not about to touch hot lye water or oil to see if its cooled enough. It was making me crazy! But I settled on one and gave it a shot. Then after many batches I read about room temperature soaping and gave it a try. I was very happy with the ease and efficiency I have while soaping at room temperature. This is my method: Measure several batches of oil at one time. I simpley line up all of my buckets and measure my oils out in assembly line fashion, cover and put away until its time to soap. Measure out two batches of my water-half in ice form and half in liquid form, add my 2 batches worth of lye and let cool. I place it in a cool locked room. Sometimes it sits overnight or for a few days. I prefer to leave it in an extra bathroom inside the bathtub just incase of a spill. On the day I am going to soap I prepare my mold by lining it with freezer paper, measure out whatever I may be adding into my soap such as clays, dyes, essential or fragrance oils and grab one batch of oil. Since I use some hard oils in my recipe I take my stick blender to the oil mixture and make sure there are no solid pieces remaining and now its time to create soap by adding in the lye slowly and stirring until trace. Trace is the name for the stage where the soap looks like a thin custard, its ready to pour into the mold now unless you plan on scenting, layering, swirling or adding in exfoliants. Once the soap is poured its time to put it to bed. I place mine in my oven, but many people prefer to put their soap in a box covered in blankets. The soap will become hot and go through another stage called gelling. You can cut your soap in a day or two but industry standard is 3 weeks of waiting before use or sale. I chose room temperature cold process soap because of its efficiency. I dont have to wait for my oil or lye water to cool, I just grab and soap. Prior to this method I did the 100-110F method and it took a very long time from start to finish and each time I had a huge mess of oils all over and only one little batch of soap to show for it. Now I have one messy oily day and 6-8 batches of oil waiting to be soaped to show for it! My soaping sessions went from an hour or longer to no more than 20 minutes. The Art Of Soap Making

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By James Winston Soap is a surface active agent used in conjunction with water for washing and cleaning. It often comes in a solid sculptured form, as bars, due to its historic and most usual shape. The use of thick liquid soap has also become common, especially from soap dispensers in public washrooms. Applied to a dirty surface, soapy water efficiently holds particles in suspension so the whole of it can be rinsed off with clean water. In urban areas, artificial detergents have made soap obsolete as a laundry aid. Many soaps are mixtures of sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids which can be gotten from oils or fats by reacting them with an alkali such as sodium or potassium hydroxide in a process known as the alkaline hydrolysis of a fat or oil to make soap. The fats are made to react with water by the base, sequential in glycerol and an ample soap. Historically, the alkali used was potassium made from the purposeful burning of growth such as scrub, or from wood house moss. The soap making recipe is a derivative from either oils or fats. Sodium tallowate, a common kind in many soaps, is in fact derived from drained beef fat. Soap can also be made of vegetable oils, such as olive oil. Soap made from such oils, is called castile soap. The use of the word “soap” has become such a natural name that even cleaning compounds for the body that don’t have soap in the makings are referred to as soap. James Winston has developed many websites over the years in many different business areas. He is a professional web developer/designer/research specialist. The Pros & Cons of Beach Weddings

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Cindy English Beach weddings are popular but they do present “special issues”. Failing to consider these ahead of time could leave you unpleasantly surprised on your wedding day! There is certainly nothing that should dissuade you from your vision of a beautiful seaside ceremony. As a matter of fact, there are many benefits. Just know the issues and plan for them. Your wedding day will be a wonderful and joyous event! The “Pros” * A beach wedding can be much cheaper than a traditional wedding. Who in this day and age can’t afford to save money? It is said that the average budget for a wedding these days is between $20,000 to $30,000! That is an enormous and unnecessary financial burden to be faced with! Don’t start off married life enslaved by your wedding day debts. If you have that kind of money to spend, fine, but if not, don’t go there! Be practical and remember, the day is what you, your loved ones and your friends make of it…not how much you spent on it! * A beach wedding can be a casual affair. It allows everyone to relax. Your guests can dress comfortably and affordably. Often brides-to-be are unaware of the financial strain they place on their wedding attendants and guests. Not everyone can afford to buy that wedding outfit. * The wedding ceremony and reception can all be held right there on the beach. No need to travel to different locations. This is very convenient for everyone. Hey, even the kids can have fun at a beach wedding! * A beach wedding allows you to involve everyone in the activities. Guests are not restricted to sitting quietly in their seats. They can actually be a part of the celebration! * Beach weddings don’t always require a permit. If you are having a small ceremony and do not require a section of the beach to be blocked off…just do it! Simple yet lovely! * A beach wedding is a modern and refreshing change from the “stodgy” traditional wedding. It allows your creativity and personality to shine through. * There is no “right” or “wrong way” to plan a beach front wedding. It can be large, small, romantic, whimsical or even downright goofy! You can pay big bucks and hire everything out, or, you can be cheap and make everything yourself. The choice is completely yours! The “Cons” * The most important thing to remember when planning a beach wedding is that “Mother Nature” rules! Depending on her mood, she can brighten your day or rain on your parade! When planning your celebration, be sure to plan an “alternate location” should the old girl be cranky that day! * The beach is usually a bit breezy so take that into consideration when picking your location. Try to choose a “cove” on the beach that is protected from direct winds. * Be sure to check with local authorities regarding any permits needed to use the beach. This should only be necessary if you are having a large gathering and you want to block off a portion of the beach exclusively for you and your guests. Ask to be sure though. * Check on the “Beach Rules”. Ask questions. Can you have candles on the beach? Can you play music into the night? How late can you stay? Is there an area nearby for open fires should you choose to barbeque? * Speaking of food…don’t forget about the seagulls! They are notorious beggars and thieves. You can expect them to attend your beach wedding, uninvited! As long as you keep food covered and don’t feed them, they will stay on the sidelines. * Remember the tides. You definitely do not want to be surprised by the quick and unanticipated arrival of high tide! * On the beach, there will be bugs and sunshine! Make sure you consider the comfort of your guests. Bring sunscreen and insect repellant for those who did not remember to bring their own. * Chairs may sink in the sand if you do not rent flooring to place under them. However, if you are planning a “beach blanket” reception, you will not need chairs. Remember your elderly guests though. Plan for their safety and comfort. You will need to provide them with chairs and beach umbrellas to protect them from the elements. Beach weddings are absolutely beautiful but nature does provide an element of uncertainty. Careful planning on your part will eliminate most of them. Just remember… If every hair is not in place due to the ocean breezes or a seagull drops off his “wedding gift” a little to close to the punch bowl… These are not flaws or imperfections in your day. They are “memories”! Cherish them and have fun! Cindy English is the publisher of: Beach-Wedding-Themes.com Beach wedding themes full of fun, fantasy and romance! Oil Finishes for Wood Projects

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Michael Russell Oil finishes are among the easiest to apply. Most of them are simply a wipe-on, wipe-off process, being sure to remove all of the excess. Here is a step-by-step process you can use with any oil finish on the market today. 1. Prepare the wood. Remove any machine marks and sand new wood smooth to 180 to 220 grit. Oil finishes are thinner than their counterparts, so a finer grit is necessary. If you are finishing a tabletop it’s a good idea to “sponge” the wood so water spills that work their way through the finish once the table is in use don’t raise the grain of the wood. Humidity can also cause grain raising over a period of years and sponging will help reduce this also. Raised grain will cause an initially smooth surface to feel rough to the touch. 2. Clean the wood. Remove as much sanding dust as possible with a brush vacuum, compressed air, or tack cloth. For compressed air users, be sure you have an in-line filter/dryer in your system or you may end up spraying a fine mist of water onto your project. Also, I prefer a cloth dampened with mineral spirits to a retail tack cloth. These cloths contain wax which can lodge in the wood grain and cause problems with the finish. Mineral spirits will not cause this and also will not raise the grain of the wood. 3. Choose the finish. What kind of oil do you want? There are many different varieties of finishes marketed under the “oil” label. Straight oil, polymerized oil, wiping varnish, or oil/varnish blend. (A related article on different types of oil finishes is in the works.) If you’ve never used one of these before I suggest you begin with a wiping varnish (for a glossy appearance) or an oil/varnish blend (for a satin look). 4. Apply the first coat. Flood the wood with the finish. Wood will only hold a certain amount of oil at one time, so if you use enough to leave standing pools on the surface, that’s all right. We’ll be wiping off the excess in a little while. Application can be by cloth, brush, or spray gun, or you can dip the wood into the finish. Leave it to dry for about five minutes. The temptation to move faster will be there. Resist it. If any dry spots appear, apply more finish. Before it becomes tacky, wipe off all the excess finish. Polymerized oil and wiping varnish will become tacky faster than straight oil or oil/varnish blends, especially in high temperatures. These products may require excess removal before five minutes have passed. 5. Remove “bleeding” before it cures. Many oils can bleed back out of the pores in the wood. Small puddles may form after you remove the excess oil. Wipe these dry and keep wiping them dry until they stop forming. 6. Apply additional coats. Let the first coat dry overnight. Smooth any remaining roughness with 400-grit sandpaper. Clean the wood as in step 2 again and apply the next coat. You can even combine these two steps by sanding the wood with wet/dry sandpaper while the wood is wet with the second coat of finish. Wipe the wood dry as before. You can then add as many coats as you like, allowing a full day drying time between coats. However, unless you are using a wiping varnish or polymerized oil there is no reason to apply more than four coats, as these finishes do not build like more solid finish. Follow these steps and you will end up with a warm, soft glow to your project that will last for many years to come. Love at First Sight Part Two: Is He For Real?

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Terry Hernon MacDonald If you’re dating a man who swears love early in your relationship, it can be difficult to determine whether his feelings are genuine. Before you find out, make sure you like him enough to see him again (sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many women stick with guys they don’t like because they’re afraid he’s the last bus out of the station). Then set up another date. Let him know you’re flattered by his interest, but that you have reservations about his proclamations of undying affection. Meet him in a neutral location like a restaurant or a bookstore. Provide your own transportation until you’re a) utterly convinced the man is harmless or b) your friends have met him. Whatever you do, do not pressure yourself to feel something for him if you don’t, no matter how many roses he sent beforehand. If you ever start thinking you owe him something, it’s time for you to spend a few nights catching up on Law and Order reruns–by yourself. Tell the guy you need time to think. His response to your request will indicate whether he respects your needs, or if he is indeed a psycho. If he allows you a few days to yourself, that’s a great sign. He’s secure, and he’s considerate of your feelings. If he doesn’t, think very carefully before you see him again. You may be inviting a control freak, or worse, a stalker into your life. If you decide he rates another date, be alert. Do his actions match his words? Does he tell the truth? How does he treat the clerk in the convenience store? How does he talk about other people, particularly his mother, sisters, and female coworkers? At no point should you tell yourself that because a guy has fallen in love with you that you must seize this opportunity for romance. If it isn’t right, your life will be hell. Take Sally. She married a man who proposed to her on the first date. For most of their 50-year union, when he wasn’t criticizing her cooking or barking at her to fetch his cigarettes, he remained slumped in front of the TV in a vinyl-upholstered recliner. Her life is a far cry from that of my cousin, who married a man two months after meeting him. My cousin had the advantage of knowing what she wanted in a man and in a relationship. She did not blind herself with romantic fantasies. She kept her eyes wide open, which allowed her to determine that the guy would make her happy. Love at first sight does exist, but make sure the lover is worthy. If a man swears his undying affection soon after you meet, congratulations. Proceed cautiously, and you just may find yourself happily married to a good-natured, successful man like my cousin’s husband. Proceed hastily, and you may end up with a life-sapping tyrant like Sally’s. The Five Keys to Powerful Partnerships

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Paul Cutright Partnerships are intentional relationships between two or more people who want to create a future together. That future could be anything from a life long marriage to a business partnership to a short-term project. Your partnerships are among the most important relationships you will ever have. And, like all our relationships, they are vulnerable to misunderstandings, miscommunications, upsets and breakdowns. Its just that there is often much more at stake in our partnerships. There are five keys necessary to unlock the potential of your most important relationships, turning them into powerful partnerships. They are: 1. Practicing High Performance Communication 2. Having a working knowledge of the 5 Stages of Relationship 3. Using a Design Model for your partnership 4. Practicing Radical Personal Responsibility 5. Committing to using your partnership for conscious evolution 1. High Performance Communication Our definition of high performance communication is communication that is honest, compassionate, direct and honors the dignity of everyone involved. Relationships live in language. That means that the quality of your regular, everyday communication determines the quality of your relationships. Your communication is not just the words you say; it is how you say those words. The result you get in your communication with others is determined by your intention. Your intention is the superior force in any communication because your intention, conscious or unconscious, is the carrier wave for the words. People will usually respond to the energy with which you say something more than the words you say. Powerful communication is congruent, meaning the words you say are consistent with your emotions and your intention. Another, often overlooked, part of communication is listening. As the listener, you have the power to influence the quality of a conversation by how you listen. Have you ever been in a conversation in which the person to whom you were speaking was not listening, or distracted, or thinking about something else entirely -like what they wanted to talk about? How did that make you feel? Have you ever done that with anyone? How does it feel to have someones complete and undivided attention when you are speaking? How you listen to another, especially your partners, can have a direct affect on their self-esteem and their sense of value. The quality of your communication determines whether you feel connected or not. We have written an entire book about high performance communication called Straight From the Heart. You can have a look at it at our website at www.PaulandLayne.com/bookstore/communication.htm. 2. Have a Working Knowledge of the Five Stages of Relationship The second key to powerful partnerships is having a working knowledge of the five stages of relationship. The five stages are Attraction, Power Struggle, Cooperation, Synergy and Completion. The most problematic stages for most people are Power Struggle and Completion. People often ask us if the Power Struggle stage is necessary. Who wouldnt want to avoid power struggle? People dont exactly jump up and down with excitement when they enter that stage, like they might in the attraction stage! The Power Struggle stage is necessary in that it is all about building trust. And trust is necessary if a relationship is to mature. Power Struggle isnt bad, its just inevitable, predictable, unavoidable and recurrent. That is, it happens more than once in any long-term relationship. Why? Because each time you increase the commitment in a relationship, e.g., investing more time, money, emotion, etc., more trust is required. Whenever more trust is required, you will temporarily revisit Power Struggle. The other problematic stage is completion. Everything that is created has a beginning, middle and end. And that includes your partnerships. There are four ways partnerships end: 1. death 2. slowly drifting apart 3. abrupt expulsion 4. consciously The first is obvious, as when one of the partners dies. The second is when partners may be separated by geography, time, interests or what-have-you. They find little in common to sustain the partnership. The third occurs with an apparently irreconcilable upset and the partnership is abruptly ended, usually with very bad feelings. Obviously, the most desirable of the four is consciously, but most people dont know how to do that. Conscious completion involves acknowledging what you have learned from the partnership, what you have contributed to the partnership, making any apologies that might be necessary and asking for and extending forgiveness. Often, completion is about changing the form of the partnership, as in parents who are divorcing. They will no longer be in the form of marriage, but they will continue to be partners at some level in co-parenting their children. In this case, conscious completion is very important for developing or maintaining mutual respect, dignity and caring in the partnership. There are particular skills to learn and master for each of the five stages and specific things to avoid. We suggest you download and print out the five stages article and read through the skills for each stage, checking off the ones you know you need to work on. This will give you a personalized curriculum for being able to master relationships and help you to create powerful partnerships. 3. Using a Design Model Would you even consider building a house without an architect and a blueprint? You wouldnt get some wood, nails and a hammer and just start putting something together and hope it turned into a house you would want to live in, would you? People do the equivalent with their partnerships all the time. They believe it will work out because it just feels right. Most people leave the success of their most important relationships up to chance and luck, in the hope that it will turn out. But, of course, it seldom does and then they are left wondering, What did I do wrong? Clearly, love and/or good intentions are not enough to guarantee success in your partnerships. In addition to those things, you also need a strong measure of education and skill education about what it takes to have relationships succeed, and skill in standard practices of success. It also helps to have a good coach to help you out along the way in applying your knowledge and developing your practices. Here is a simple 3 part model we have found to be extremely effective for designing partnerships. Purpose Results Form First, be clear on the purpose of your partnership. You can get to that by asking why? why are we in this partnership? Purpose determines the direction you are going in. Purpose statements are best kept simple and general. Then, write out the results you want to accomplish. Those could be feelings, experiences, products or services, depending on the nature of the partnership. This is where you get specific. Results are the what. Look to see if the results you want in your partnership are consistent with your purpose. If they arent, then you know you will have trouble down the road. Last, determine the best form to serve your purpose that will help you achieve your desired results. Some examples of forms of relationship are friends, teammates, business colleagues, business partners, dating, engagement, marriage. Form is tied to the roles you play in your life. Form is all about how you will achieve your desired results and ongoingly fulfill your purpose. Here is an example of what this might look like. Take two people who are attracted to each other romantically and are falling in love. They start talking about building a future together. If they were to use this design model, they would have deep conversations about the purpose of their relationship. They may decide their purpose is simply to bring out the best in each other. The kinds of results they want to experience in their relationship could include fun, laughter, deep, heart-felt sharing, travel, time apart, creativity, sexual pleasure, intellectual stimulation and community involvement. They would then have conversations about what the best form might be to accomplish those results, given their purpose. One of the important things to remember about form is that form changes. If the couple in our example is having these conversations as the level of serious dating, they may look at going steady and being monogamous. Or if they are further along in their relationship, they may consider being engaged. All of these are forms, and they change over time as commitment deepens and trust is developed. 4. Practicing Radical Personal Responsibility Here is something that is very important to understand. Upsets, disagreements, misunderstandings, miscommunications and breakdowns are inevitable, predictable and unavoidable in your partnerships. Now, why in the world would we say something like that? What about positive thinking? Just look into your own experience. Havent you had upsets and disagreements despite your best intentions and despite your positive thinking? Unfortunately, good intentions and positive thinking are not enough to avoid or prevent upsets and misunderstandings. They are a fact of life in human relationships at this stage of our development. What is really required is a new way of interpreting these events. And that requires the knowledge and skill necessary to truly use them as opportunities for healing and spiritual growth. It is extremely important to have a mutually agreed upon, pre-determined means for handling these things when they occur. If you wait to see how you resolve your upsets when you actually have them, you will be setting yourselves up to lose and possibly making the situation even worse. We have written a best selling book on this subject called Youre Never Upset for the Reason You Think: Secrets and Strategies for Resolving Any Upset Quickly and Easily. You may learn more about it www.PaulandLayne.com/bookstore/conflict.htm. Now, the fourth and fifth keys work closely together, so we will talk about both of them here. The fifth key is: 5. Using Your Partnerships for Conscious Evolution What does conscious evolution mean? Simply put, it means that you recognize that your partnerships provide you with a powerful opportunity for your personal and spiritual growth. And you can truly take advantage of the opportunities present in your partnerships if you share a commitment to use your relationship with each other for your mutual growth and evolution. The greatest opportunities for conscious evolution lay your upsets with others and how you handle them. Practicing radical personal responsibility means not blaming your partner or yourself. Rather, you look together to see how you can learn from the upset. This is based upon the idea that you are never upset for the reason that you think, and there is value in looking deeper than the obvious. It is the recognition that most present time upsets are simply an activation of unresolved pain and hurts from the past and that this current upset is truly a healing opportunity. When you practice high performance communication, when you know where you are within the five stages of partnership, when you are using a proven model to consciously design your partnership to be the way you want it to be, when you can use your present time upsets to help you resolve your unresolved issues from the past, and you and your partner have an agreement to be allies with each other in that process, then you are practicing conscious evolution and living in a powerful partnership. 2006 Paul and Layne Cutright All rights reserved. Your Over “Confidence” May Be Driving The Men / Women Away Pt. 1

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Christine Akiteng This past week I had a conversation with an acquaintance of mine who is also a Dating Coach. We were discussing why some intellectual straits, outspoken leader-type, very good looking and very confident men and women populate the ranks of frustrated singles, unhappy spouses and loners while average looking others of ordinary intellectual talent and means do better in dates and in moving dates into relationships. Self-confidence in my definition includes an awareness of ones strengths, qualities, abilities and skills, and the expectation, trust and conviction that those strengths, qualities, abilities and skills will lead to a positive outcome. Confident people have no or little doubt that they know what they are doing and have boundless optimism which makes many of us want what they have. But sometimes confidence can work against you especially if reality and expectation are mismatched. I know its hard to even think that something as good as confidence can come back and bite you in the rear. Overconfidence can blind you to your competitive advantage and from seeing the moves you need to make to ensure you and your date or partner are moving in a successful direction. Quite often if things dont happen or go the way you expected or wanted (and wanted now), you become angry and act impulsively - and your behaviour drives the object of your attention and affection away. For example, you may have gotten vibes from a man or woman you have a thing for and concluded that he/she is into you how can he/she not be? You are smart, good looking, successful, rich, popular etc. But then you call or email him/her or give him/her your number and he/she does not return the phone call or reply to your email within the time you expected him/her to. You become angry, call several times, leave threatening messages, go by his/her place or even break off the relationship because how dare he/she?. How can he/she be so insensitivity to your feelings? How can someone lack of common sense, depth and “class”? Its only much later when you are calmer and less emotional that you regret acting impulsively - that is if you are even humble enough to recognize the fact that you acted umpulsively. If you are overly assertive, forceful, opinionated, love the sound of your own voice and have an air of superiority simply because you have good looks, skill or luck in a particular area of life, youll tend to have many first and even third dates but thats all. You may even start a relationship but it does not last long. From what seems like out of nowhere, the other person starts giving you excuses (like my ex wants us to get back together, or my business needs me, or I am falling in love with you and its distracting me from x or y, or you are too good looking/smart to want to go out with someone like me etc), anything to avoid seeing or being with you. If you are getting the looks and initial interest but no action and yet your friends or relatives who seem to have “nothing on you” are getting hitched then before you go out on another date check if your over confidence isn’t the problem. Part 2 of this article has a few questions you need to be asking yourself and some suggestions as to how you can make sure that your self-confidence works for you and not against you.
