Strong Nonprofit Taglines - Seven Dos and Don’ts

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Nancy E. Schwartz The best taglines quickly succeed in engaging audiences. Try to create a tagline that is a brief and focused call to action and avoid taglines that try to say too much, are too long or too vague Case Study: Does Smokey the Bear’s tagline work, or not? Lets take a look at the widely-recognized Smokey the Bear tagline as a great example. Most of you are familiar with this one: “Only you can prevent wildfires.” I admire its brevity, focus and emphasis on call to action. And the tagline really succeeds in engaging audiences, as it places a great deal of responsibility for preventing forest fires on “you.” Comment However, a colleague had another perspective to offer: “There’s a problem with this tagline in terms of framing. I often read how wildfires result from public policy decisions about forest and prairie use and development. But this tagline limits public thinking about other ways of solving wildfire problems, and cuts short the public debate about land use.” Response Very good point, but from my perspective, a tagline can’t cover everything. If it’s crafted to do so, it tends to be too long or too vague. As a result, broad taglines generally fail. First thing, I reviewed the Smokey the Bear mission and saw that its primary focus is on educating individuals on how they can prevent forest fires. Although Smokey articulates development policies as one of four key reasons for forest fires, Smokey’s website cites that 50% of forest fires are man-made. Not only that, Smokey focuses on educating individuals on forest fires and engaging them in the fight against fires, including advocacy. So “you” in the tagline is not to exclude the notion of non-man-made fires but to engage audiences through the use of a very personal voice. See the website for more details: http://www.smokeybear.com/wildfires.asp What are the dos and don’ts of powerful nonprofit taglines? Tagline Dos and Don’ts DOs Ensure that your tagline works together with your organization’s name, positioning statement and key messages. The words in the tagline should be found in your positioning statement and key messages. Consistency of message is the name of the game. Emphasize action and/or emotion. Use verbs, not just nouns. You want your nonprofit’s tagline to actively engage your audience.

Examples that work: “Explore, enjoy and protect the planet.” Sierra Club “Saving babies, together” March of Dimes “Providing Medical Relief Worldwide” Doctors Without Borders Make sure it’s easy to pronounce and spell, and sounds pleasant to the ear.

Don’t make your audiences struggle. Remember, they’re your best communicators via word of mouth. DON’Ts Don’t be generic. Be specific and as emotive as possible. Weak “Building a Better New York” This tagline could represent a construction firm or the mayor’s office. In reality, it’s the tagline of a nonprofit providing legal services to other nonprofits.

 Powerful “Connecting Lawyers and Communities”

From the same kind of nonprofit in another city. Don’t craft a tagline your organization can’t stand behind 100%.

Your nonprofit has to be able to deliver what you promise. When you do so, your organization reaffirms its credibility. When you don’t, you lose any you may have. Don’t launch your tagline before trying it out.

Before committing yourself to your top choice, get feedback from at least 10 members of key internal and external audiences. You may discover one of two things: They just don’t get it, or you don’t feel 100% comfortable with it yourself. Don’t change your tagline more than once a decade. Your audiences will remember it and, unless your nonprofit changes its programs and services drastically, there’s value in keeping the same tagline for a decade or so. Nancy E. The 10 Commandments of Successful Exercise and Weight Loss Programs

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Kevin Gianni Successful and rewarding exercise and weight loss programs can be different in design, but they all carry some very similar traits. I call them the 10 Commandments… ready to learn what will propel you to fitness success? You don’t have to be religious to follow these! Read on… 1. Thou Shalt Eat Healthy Meals Successful exercise and weight loss programs hinge on the time you make for yourself to eat healthy meals. Everyone is “on the run”, whether they travel, have kids, work 18 hours a day. Planning is the only way to integrate healthy eating habits and exercise into their daily routine. Just like anything, you have to think about it and make a conscious effort to change your habits in order for them to stick. 2. Thou Shalt Move… Anytime! Having a 20 minute exercise routine is better than having none. Having a 10 minute routine is better than none. The key is being prepared. Many people find themselves with 20-30 minute pockets of time during their days where they have nothing to do. This is the best time to squeeze in a walk or a quick office or one of your home workout routines. 3. Thou Shalt Be Prepared Carry a bag in your car with these items. Running shoes, bottled water, a change of clothes and a towel. Being prepared with this emergency exercise kit will help you use those precious moments to get in some of the exercise that your body so desperately needs. 4. Thou Shalt Not Skip Breakfast You would think that the clients I have who are over 300 pounds would eat a kings breakfast. They don’t. In fact most of them don’t eat breakfast at all. Not even the stuff that is nutrient poor like pancakes, bagels and waffles! When you skip breakfast, your metabolism never “wakes up” from your sleep and your body thinks there’s going to be a famine. This means it holds on to food in the form of fat, making your waistline expand, and your energy levels drop. 5. Thou Shalt Set Goals If you don’t know where you’re going you’ll never get there. Exercise and weight loss programs go absolutely nowhere if you don’t plan for your success. Write your goals down, be extrordinary, and make sure you put together a collage and put it somewhere you will see it all the time to be reminded of your quest. 6. Thou Shalt Find a Support Group A great way to succeed is to be around a group of peers who support and care about you. There are many different ways to find a support group. You can join a local one or an online group. If you’re not comfortable with that, you can always enlist the help of a friend. 7. Thou Shalt Drink Water To keep your body functioning at maximum efficiency, you need fluid. Many people compromise their exercise and weight loss programs by never drinking enough water to flush out their systems and keep their metabolism fired up. 8. Thou Shalt Not Listen to the Fat Guy Don’t go to the fat guy for health and fitness advice. I can’t tell you how many fat people want to give me advice on how to train and teach people how to lose weight. Listen to those who are living it and are visually in the place you’d like to be. 9. Thou Shalt Learn New Things Keep learning new things from new people. Many different exercise and weight loss programs focus on different ideas and techniques. The best weight loss program might be a combination of two or three. 10. Thou Shalt Smile! Smiling will help you succeed mentally. Exercise and weight loss programs are tough and when you can take them with a lighter heart and mind, your success is inevitable. The Diverse Benefits Of Deep Breathing Exercises!

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Tim Webb Many exercise regimes depend upon machinery, gyms, and expensive gadgets. However, what if I told you that just by using your breath in certain ways, combined with contractions of certain muscles, you could quickly and easily work up a sweat? Well, this is the truth! In fact, by focusing on your breath first and by holding certain positions for time, you can greatly enhance digestion, internal organ health, as well as generate feelings of well-being and focus. All you need to do is harness your breath. Below are some of the main benefits of having deep breathing exercises as a part of your exercise regime. 1. Ease of access. 2. You can immediately feel the benefits of some exercises. 3. Diverse benefits. Depending on whether the exercisesyou choose are meditative in nature or more dynamicyou can achieve different objectives. 4. Holistic. They can be based around your mind and body to make a ‘normal’ physical workout into something more profound and rewarding. 5. They can help you in numerous situations. At the office, in the car, first thing in the morning. By consciously regulating your breath you can gain a calming effect, a pick me-up, or even a stomach tightening mini workout! 6. Boost immunity. By using your breath to aid in clearing your mind and getting you into a meditative state you can fight off illness and recover from workouts faster! Should Christians Celebrate Christmas?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Paul Griffitts My family always has a Christmas tree every year because it was the popular thing to do. We have ornaments, holly wreaths, presents and everything else that goes along with the Christmas celebration. I know it was borderline but in that everyone liked it so much and it’s supposed to be in honor of our Lord’s birthday I went along with it all these years. This year I have looked at the weight of Scriptural evidence that has caused me to reconsider how harmless and good this holiday is. Just where in The Bible does it tell us not to celebrate Christmas? Christmas Not a Bible Doctrine In the first place, Christmas is not a Bible Doctrine. If our blessed Lord had wanted us to celebrate His birthday, He would have told us when to celebrate it and how to celebrate it. But Christ never told anyone to celebrate His birthday. Furthermore, we know from the Bible and from church history that the apostles and the early church never celebrated Christ’s birthday. The Bible is God’s complete and final revelation to man, and it tells us everything we need to know for our spiritual lives (II Timothy 3:16). We don’t have to go outside the Bible for anything. God’s Word tells us how we’re to worship, how we’re to give money for the support of the Lord’s work, how to evangelize the lost, how to observe the Lord’s Supper and everything else pertaining to the Christian life. But not once in the Bible does God tell us to celebrate Christmas! We’re told to remember the Lord’s death, but nowhere are we told to celebrate His birth. God’s people are supposed to be Bible people. We are supposed to live by the teaching of the God’s Holy Word. So the very fact that Christmas is never mentioned in the Bible is sufficient reason for us not to have anything to do with it. But that’s not all. Christ Not born on December 25 The second reason I not to celebrate Christmas is that Christ was not born on December 25th. Notice: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.” Luke 2:8 Don’t miss the point: the shepherds WERE IN THE FIELDS taking care of their flocks on the night Jesus Christ was born. As the shepherds were watching their sheep, the message came to them of the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a well known fact that December falls in the middle of the rainy season in Palestine, and the sheep were kept in the fold at that time of the year. The shepherds always corralled their flocks from October to April. They brought their sheep from the mountainsides and the fields no later than October 15th to protect them from the cold, rainy seasons that followed that date. So the birth of Christ could not have taken place at the end of December. Secondly, Luke 2:1,3 tells us that at the time of the birth of Jesus Christ it was decreed that, “all the world would be taxed…And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.” This couldn’t have taken place in the winter. Caesar Augustus, the ruler of Rome, would certainly not call for such a taxing in the depth of winter. Travel at this time of the year is extremely difficult; hence, it would be virtually impossible for everyone to comply with the decree if it had been given then. The Lord Himself testified to the rigors of traveling in winter, for He told the people to pray that their flight at the end of this age would not be in winter (Matthew 24:20). No one knows the exact day when Jesus Christ was born, but in all the probability He was born sometime during September. We can be reasonably sure of this because His earthly ministry lasted approximately 3 1/2 years, and He was crucified on the 14th day of the month of Nisan, which corresponds to our April (John 19:31, Leviticus 23:5). If we go back about 3 1/2 years to the time when Jesus Christ was 30 years old - when He began His public ministry - we come to the month of September. This was probably the month when our Lord was born into the world. Origin of Christmas Thousands of years before Jesus Christ was born, heathens in every country observed December 25th as the birthday of a god who was called the sun-god. Semiramis, the widow of Nimrod, was his mother. She claimed to be the queen of heaven. And she had a son who was supposed to have been born on December 25th; his name was Tammuz. According to all the heathen religions of that time, Tammuz had a miraculous birth; and for centuries his birthday was celebrated with feasts, revelry and drunken orgies. The heathen celebrated Tammuz birthday according to the very example he set for them. He was the world’s greatest lover of women, strong drink, dirty jokes and other sensual fun. It is said that he loved everybody and that everybody loved him. And it was on December 25th that all the pagan religions celebrated the birthday of Tammuz, the son-god. This is all clearly brought out in Alexander Hislop’s great book, “The Two Babylon’s”. Any reputable encyclopedia will also verify these facts. It’s plain to see, isn’t it, that Christmas is a pagan holiday that came out of old pagan Babylon. Christmas: A Catholic Holiday The fourth reason I not to celebrate Christmas is because Christmas is a Catholic holiday. Why should I steal Christmas from the Catholics? They got it from the pagans, and I’m happy to let them keep it. Notice what Encyclopedia Americana has to say about Christmas and Catholicism. “Christmas it was according to many authorities NOT celebrated in the first centuries of the Christian churches as the Christian usage in general was to celebrate the death of remarkable persons rather than their birth. A feast was established in memory of the birth of the Saviour in the FOURTH CENTURY. In the Fifth Century the Western Church (Roman Catholic) ordered it to be celebrated forever on the day of the old Roman feast of the birth of Sol. The holly, mistletoe, the yule log and the wassail bowl are of pre-Christian times. The Christmas tree has been traced back to the Romans. It went from Germany to Great Britain.” Encyclopedia Britannica has this to say about Christmas: “Christmas (i.e., the Mass of Christ) was not among the earliest festivals of the church.” After Constantine became the Emperor of Rome, he forced all the pagans of his empire to be baptized into the Christian Church. Thus pagans far outnumbered true Christians. Since the church worshiped the Lord Jesus as the Son of God, when the 25th of December rolled around and the pagans wanted to worship Tammuz, their sun-god, Constantine knew that he would have to do something. So he had the church combine the worship of Tammuz with the birthday of Christ, and a special mass was declared to keep everyone happy. Thus pagan worship was brought into the Christian church and called “Christ-mass.” Every time we say “Merry Christmas,” we’re actually mixing the precious and holy name of Christ with paganism. This is not right. God says in Ezekiel 20:39, “Pollute ye my holy name no more.” The World and Christmas That brings me to the next reason not to celebrate Christmas. Christmas is of the world, and we’re commanded, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” I John 2:15 The very fact that the world which hates Christ and His blood atonement for sin makes more fuss about Christmas than any other holiday proves to me that Christmas is not of God. If December 25th were truly the birthday of the blessed Son of God, the world would have nothing to do with it! You don’t have to be a Christian to celebrate Christmas. Even in non-Christian countries like Japan, Czechoslovakia and Russia the people celebrate Christmas. People throughout the world, who for the most part have no awareness of the Bible or Jesus Christ, eat up the Christmas celebration. To take Christmas from the world would be harder than making peace in the middle east. Let’s face it, the world is married to the idol of Christmas. In fact, more people get drunk at Christmas than any other time of the year. There are more big parties and more selfish spending than any other season. The world loves Christmas, but it hates Christ. Doesn’t that prove that it’s not of God? Unscriptural Traditions Another reason not to celebrate Christmas is that it’s filled with unscriptural tradition. The exchanging of gifts, the Christmas tree, the singing of carols and Santa Claus are all pagan origin. These all crept into the church during or after the Fourth Century. There are many unscriptural traditions that have cluttered up the story of the birth of our wonderful Saviour. For instance, many people believe that the wise men of East and the shepherds were together in Bethlehem at the time our Lord was born. But nothing could be further from the truth. The shepherds came to Bethlehem to see Jesus Christ at His birth. The wise men came to see Jesus Christ when He was almost two years old (Matthew 2:16). Furthermore, the Bible says nothing about three wise men, nor does it say that they were kings. The fact is the Bible does not give their number at all but merely states that they were wise (magi) men. These men were known to understand the story written in the stars which is why Herod the king wanted to talk with them and find out why they were traveling in his land. When he found out they had seen His star in the heavens and that it signified the great King was born Herod determined to kill this new King and diligently asked when did they see His star. This is why Herod had all the male children two years and younger put to death in Bethlehem. The wise men or magi as the Bible calls them had taken more then eighteen months to prepare and make the long journey and there were many in the caravan who came to see. Thousands of parents will teach their children the falsehood of Santa Claus. Children are taught that Santa Claus makes his home at the North Pole, and once each year he fills his sled with toys for the boys and girls who have been good throughout the year. If they are good, he brings them toys on Christmas Eve, and if they are bad, he passes them by. Is it any wonder that many times when children grow up and learn the truth, they question whether Christ is also another Christmas myth and all their lives wonder if heaven or hell will be their reward for the things they have done. The Bible says in Colossians 3:9, “Lie not one to another,”. We are commanded in Ephesians 4:25 to put “away lying,” and to “every man speak truth with his neighbor.” Now I know that some of you loving mothers are saying, “Don’t you think we should give the children a good time? They don’t understand all the paganism behind Christmas.” Let’s teach our children the truth about Christmas. God’s Word says that we should bring up children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). Why should we dishonor the name of Christ in such a manner under the pretense of showing the children a good time? There are 364 more days in the year during which we can give gifts to our children. Merrymaking and Exchanging Gifts Without question, the most important part of Christmas for most people is buying and exchanging gifts. I don’t celebrate Christmas because exchanging gifts has nothing to do with Christ’s birthday. Perhaps some of you are asking, “Didn’t the wise men give gifts to Jesus?” They certainly did, but they didn’t give them to one another. And their gifts were not birthday gifts because the wise men did not come to visit Jesus Christ until He was nearly two years old (Matthew 2:16). The shepherds came to visit Jesus Christ as His birth, but the wise men came to see Him nearly two years later. Did you know that giving gifts to a king was common custom in the Far East? That’s the reason why the wise men brought gifts to Jesus Christ because He was born to be King of the Jews. But they were not birthday gifts. So there is no connection between Christmas and the birthday of Jesus Christ in this respect. One final word before leaving the matter of exchanging gifts. Let me point out that even this is used by Satan’s antichrist program. The greatest gift celebration yet to come will be during the awful days of the tribulation. During the antichrist’s reign all hell will be loose. The two witnesses who God shall send to the people of the earth will be killed when God is finished with them. Can you guess who will kill them? The antichrist will put them to death. Listen to God’s Word: “And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.” Revelation 11:7 It is under antichrist’s reign that the last and greatest gift celebration shall take place. As a result of the death of these prophets of God, the world will be so delighted and thrilled that they will exchange gifts with one another. Here is what the Bible says, “And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and a half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in the graves. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwell on the earth.” Revelation 11:9-10 Christmas Condemned by the Puritans The pagan history of Christmas has been well known throughout history. In fact, at one time the celebration of this pagan custom was forbidden by law in England. In 1644, Parliament declared Christmas to be unlawful; and, consequently, it was abolished. The English Puritans looked upon the celebration of Christmas as the work of Satan. At one time in early American history, the observance of Christmas was illegal. A law was adopted in the general court of Massachusetts about 1650, which required that those who celebrated Christmas were to be punished. The statue read, “Whosoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas, or in any other way…shall be subject to fine of 5 shillings.” The law’s preamble explained its purpose was “for preventing disorders…(by) observing such festivals as were superstitiously kept in other countries to the great dishonor of God and the offense of others.” After the Mayflower pilgrims landed in 1620, the first December 25th was spent in labor and cutting down trees “in order to avoid any frivolity on the day sometimes called Christmas.” Opposition to the observance of Christmas continued just past the second half of the Nineteenth Century. An article in the December 26, 1855 edition of the New York Daily Times stated, “The churches of the Presbyterians, Baptists and Methodists were not open on December 25 except where some mission schools had a celebration. They do not accept the day as a holy one, but the Episcopalian, Catholic and German churches were all open. Inside they were decked with evergreens.” The Puritans knew the truth about Christmas and regarded it as a pagan holiday. It would be good if all believers followed their example. What About the Christmas Tree? Another reason not to observe Christmas is because the Christmas tree is condemned by the Bible. Notice: “Learn not the way of the heathen…For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it may not move. But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.” Jeremiah 10:2-4,9 Here you have a perfect description of the Christmas tree, called by God “the way of the heathen.” We are commanded not to learn that way or follow it! The Christmas tree is also viewed in this passage as idolatry. The fifth verse says that these trees cannot speak-cannot walk-must be carried. Some people misread this to make it say that there is no harm in having a Christmas tree, but that is not what it says at all. Rather, the Prophet Jeremiah tells us that it is vanity and foolishness and says, “Learn not the way of the heathen.” Some people will be up all night to work on an old dead tree. They’ll trim it all up and stand off a little ways and admire their handiwork. Then many of them will sit up all night and look at that old Christmas tree. Did you know that the green tree is mentioned 14 times in the Bible, and in every instance it is likened with idolatry? There isn’t one place in the Bible where God commends the use of the “green tree” in connection with true worship. Perhaps you’re wondering why people have a Christmas tree during the Christmas celebration. You can search the Bible through and through, but you won’t find a reason for it there. The first decorating of any evergreen tree began with the heathen Greeks and their worship of their god Adonis, who allegedly was brought back to life by the serpent Aesculapius after having been slain. And each Christmas multitudes of people will secure an evergreen tree and dress it up with bright glitter, lights and tinsel, not realizing that they are following the tradition of a pagan festival in honor of a false god! No doubt there are many sincere Christians who think that they are honoring Christ by having their Christmas tree when, in reality, they are dishonoring Him by having anything to do with a heathen festival that God hates. As you read these lines perhaps you say, “I have my Christmas tree but I don’t worship it, and consequently, I see nothing wrong with it.” Let me remind you, however, that you don’t determine what is right and what is wrong. God determines what’s right and wrong. If the Christmas tree is not an idol to you, why are you so reluctant to give it up? What are you doing down on your knees when you place your gifts under it? Observing Days Forbidden Finally Christians should not celebrate Christmas because God’s Word forbids the observance of any holy days in this dispensation of grace. Listen: “Ye observe days, and month, and times, and years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.” Galations 4:10-11 This tells us that the observance of days is a sign of weakness, childish understanding of The Truth and lack of growing up into Him. There are no special holy days for members of the body of Christ. The Lord wants us to worship Him the same 365 days a year. We’re not worshiping a dead Christ or a helpless infant lying in a manger, but we’re worshiping a real living Christ who lives all year round. Sometimes well-meaning people will make the statement, “Let’s put the Christ back into Christmas.” This sounds very good on the surface however, how can you put Christ back into something when He was never there? Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the famous English preacher of the last century, said, “We have no superstitious regard for times and seasons. Certainly we do not believe in the present ecclesiastical arrangement called Christmas…we find no scriptural word whatever for observing any day as the birthday of the Saviour; and consequently, it’s observance is a superstition, because (it’s) not of divine authority…probably the fact is that the ‘holy days’ (were) arranged to fit in with the heathen festivals…how absurd to think we could do it in the spirit of the world, with a Jack Frost clown, a deceptive worldly Santa Claus, and a mixed program of sacred truth with fun, deception, and faction.” While the world celebrates Christmas with its gift swapping and parties, what should be our attitude? God’s Word makes it plain that we should have nothing to do with this pagan holiday. Let’s not associate the birth of the holy Son of God with the pagan traditions of men. Let us heed God’s command; “Be ye separate, O my people.” II Corinthians 6:17 Bless you now and always in Christ Jesus the Lord. Growing Bamboo And Grasses In The Uk And Temperate Zones

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Peter Corbett Growing tips and advice for bamboo and grasses in the UK. Growing tips for plant care and garden advice on hardy bamboo plants ornamental grasses plus sedges and ferns for contemporary European or prairie plantings bogland wetland areas or gravel and dry gardens. If you give a plant growing conditions that are similar to those that it thrives in the wild then that plant will usually do very well. Its not always as easy as it sounds. Every garden has its own microclimate and although there are one or two things we can possibly do to improve that, usually by adding or growing wind breaks, creating sun traps and opening up shaded areas the options are fairly limited. There is nothing on the other hand we can do about the overall climate in general. Living in the UK means we are living the temperate zone where our climate is very much influenced by the fact we are an island. The presence of the gulf stream blessing us with milder winters than we possibly deserve for our latitude particularly when compared with corresponding latitudes in central China ,where the winters can be extremely cruel. Many of the ornamental bamboos come from these areas in China such as Ganshu, Sezchuan, Zhejiang where the seasonal changes are far more extreme than we experience in the United Kingdom. As a consequence we can easily grow bamboos such as Phyllostachys Bissettii which is hardy down to minus 23 degrees without much worry. However on the other hand we do not have such intensely hot summers, so where a bamboo like Bissettii will quite easily reach over 12 meters or more in its home environment we can expect it to make about two thirds of that in our climate. Usual between 5 and 8 meters depending on whereabouts in the UK we are situated. Still a respectable size for a larger garden and quite formidable for an average one. Although bamboos are true grasses their needs differ from many of the ornamental grasses. Where the majority of grasses are happy with impoverished soil and handle severe drought condition and exposure to the elements such as wind bamboos are a little more fuss though with a little care in choosing your plants you should be able to cope with most situations. In China much of the very best bamboos grow in hollows and shallow valleys protected from the drying winds yet still enjoying maximum sunshine and the benefits of a moist and fertile pockets at the bottom of the depression. You probably have a picture in your minds eye of what you would like your garden to look like, but please take a moment before you start ordering your plants to make a basic appraisal of your gardens disposition with regard to the soil type the aspect and its exposure and also the shadow boundaries, a factor that is often overlooked. Once you know what you have, you will be able to assess weather it can be improved or altered. If its not possible to improve or alter your garden or the costs are prohibitive then it may be necessary to compromise a little. Now I mean compromise a little, because although the grasses you had originally planed to put in a particular position or situation may now appear unsuitable due to the fact that position is shaded or far to wet . Dont worry there are loads of alternatives amongst the sedges and ferns that will literally thrive in those conditions and are very capable of producing some of the most unusual and attractive displays that you could wish for. There is a saying about putting the wrong plant in the wrong place. Basically its bull and the rest can go with the organic much. There is no such thing as the wrong plant; they are all the right plants, just some of them get put in the wrong places. Use your eyes and look around you and appraise. Do your home work and find out which plant suits the soil type which aspect is best for that particular plant then you wont go far wrong. Finally if you have planted a bamboo or grass and it does not look like its doing well, then dig it up and move it somewhere else dont worry about the right time, the right time is right now, while its looking poorly not when its dead. The plant wants to survive as much as you want it to do. Before deciding what and where you are going to plant make an assessment of the area. If you can try to do it early in the year so you have plenty of time to plan ahead. This is also a good time to determine where the shadow boundaries are. In the early months of the year, the sun is low on the horizon and the shadows extend further into the garden. Look out on a bright day and mark the extent of those boundaries with a couple of pegs. Determining these boundaries is quite important as most true grasses relish the sun and do best when the have maximum exposure to it, even through the winter months. This is because grasses including bamboo are incredibly sophisticated plants when it comes to converting sunlight to energy through photosynthesis. Most grasses including bamboo, with a few exceptions do not generally do well in shade. However sedges and rushes do. Once you have determined the limitations of your boundaries you will have a good idea where grasses and sedges belong. The exposure to wind and elements will depend to a degree of openness of your garden. The prevailing winds, coastal conditions, altitude, and geographical location will all have an effect on the microclimate of your garden. Exposure to wind is probably the most damaging as it can desiccate plants and dry out the soil very quickly even in the winter months. It may be possible to erect physical windbreaks such as fences or screens, however there are many bamboos and grasses that stand up extremely well to exposed conditions and the larger species can be used to good effect on the boundaries to form a quick growing living screen that is far cheaper more attractive and wonderfully animated in the wind when compared to conventional fencing. Knowing your soil types is essential. I say types, as even the smallest garden may have a variety of different soil compositions and varying PH levels in it. Most grasses and bamboos are unfussy about the PH but there is always the one or to that are, so check the lists above. . Composition of the soil is also important, a shaded area on the north-facing wall of your property may prove to be extremely dry due to its shelter from the prevailing wet weather winds, absorption from the footings, or excess drainage created by a high proportion of builders rubble and sand that has been left or backfilled. These conditions are not conducive to most sedges or ferns and in fact not conducive to much at all. The options here are to dig out the planting area and isolate the footings by placing a polythene sheet or damp course between the wall footings and then replacing the soil after it has been much improved with lots of organic manure or compost and possibly riddled as well. If you also have areas that have a suitable aspect for grasses, but tend to be heavy and wet, then you can improve those areas by digging in plenty of sharp sand grit or shingle to improve the drainage. Unlike bamboos and sedges grasses don’t have a high nutrient requirement in fact many do best on poor soil so there is no great need to incorporate organic manures or fertilizers. An excellent way to maintain drainage in these areas is to make a gravel garden where a number of specimen clump forming grasses can be shown off to advantage within an area of gravel mulch. This will effectively suppress unwanted weeds and the gravel will work its way down over time into the soil and preserve its open structure an drainage. Bamboos on the other hand do best with a fertile free draining and evenly moist soil. They will however tolerate most condition except to excess. Perhaps their biggest dislikes are waterlogged ground and dense shade. Like grasses they do not take a lot of looking after if placed in the right spot with their minimum basic requirements plus a hair cut, comb through and brush up and an occasional feed. The problems to be aware of with bamboos is that some are clumpers and well behaved, ideal for specimen planting in lawns or as a backdrop for herbaceous perennials. The others are runners beware some are rampant, such as the staggeringly beautiful Chimonobambusa Tumidissinoda from China who like Genghis Kahn with his hoards will gallop across your lawn and into next doors in no time at all. These bamboos are best kept I containers and they do well being shown off and appreciated as such. Why Should You Get An Online College Diploma?

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

By Harris Jhosta The rise of the internet has brought about a wealth of resources and information for people all over the globe. Now, many people are even turning to the web to get a college education, receiving online diplomas entirely via distance education. Acquiring an online college diploma is fast becoming a popular way of furthering educational goals, and many mba degrees can be obtained entirely online. Whats more, there are many benefits to obtaining your degree online versus attending a traditional classroom setting. Whatever your reasons for attending an online institution, theres no denying that its becoming a popular alternative to traditional education. For students, its very hard to juggle a job with school and family life. Thats what makes an online education so attractive. Students have the ability to fit their coursework into a schedule that works for them, while still holding down a full time job and taking care of responsibilities at home. Getting an online college diploma offers students a chance to obtain a college education without shirking their other duties. This works especially well for older students who didnt go to college right out of high school and instead chose to pursue a career. Whether you work best at two in the afternoon or two in the morning, online diplomas offer the convenience and flexibility you need in your busy life. For other students, the idea of sitting in a classroom is not very appealing. Many potential students desire to obtain a degree, but are turned off by the thought of having to work at the pace of others. By choosing to obtain a degree online, you have the ability to work at your own pace. Whether you want to focus and complete your coursework ahead of schedule, or feel that you will need extra time during certain portions of the class to truly master some of the more difficult concepts, an online degree provides you with the flexibility and options your desire. Additionally, with online diplomas you are still receiving the same level of education you would in a traditional classroom. Oftentimes, the scope of your degree program even allows you to learn more information than you would in a classroom. Because students are not limited by geography, you also open up wider connections to network and are able to obtain assistance and support from your teachers and classmates via internet chat rooms, forums and of course e-mail. These methods of communication allow for quick feedback, and you cant beat the convenience. If youre interested in getting an online college diploma, you dont have to worry about the level of respect youll receive from other colleges or employers. In most cases, online diplomas are still well respected in the workforce, and as long as they are properly accredited you will have no trouble furthering your education at other colleges or universities, whether online or off. So, not only do you reap the benefits online university diplomas offer in terms of convenience and networking opportunities, but will still receive the same level of respect you would if your degree came from a traditional brick and mortar facility. Receiving an online college diploma can help you achieve your educational goals in a convenient manner, and allow you to juggle multiple responsibilities much more effectively than a traditional classroom setting would allow. The benefits to receiving online diplomas are endless, and students everywhere are turning to the internet to further their education. While traditional learning institutions will never be abolished, the internet offers multiple opportunities to succeed in your educational goals, and provides a flexible environment for you to do so. Recovering From a Career Crisis

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Garrett Coan If you have ever experienced any of the following, you have had a career crisis: Losing your job Being fired Burning out Not wanting to do your job for one more day A career crisis can be caused either by someone else (being laid off) or by your own feelings (burning out). Common Causes of Career Crises There are many reasons why people experience career crises. Here are a few: Corporate downsizing Burnout Relocating for your spouses career Being fired Making the wrong career move Corporate politics Not fitting in Why a Career Crisis Is So Devastating A career crisis is almost always devastating because it can impact your life in so many ways. Here are a few examples: 1. Money: Losing your income with no warning can be financially devastating. 2. Status: If your job gives you status or a professional identity, you may feel devastated without it. 3. Surprise: If the job loss happens without warning, you will probably feel shocked. 4. Self-esteem: You may feel embarrassed by what has happened. 5. Feeling alone: You are likely to lose friends and companions when you no longer work in the same place. 6. Feeling out of synch: Your regular routine may be disrupted. 7. Confusion: If the crisis happens because of burnout or for reasons inside yourself, you may feel confused about what to do next. 8. Effect on others: If people around you depend on your income and need you to be predictable, they may react negatively to your crisis. Career Crisis: Who It Hurts the Most A career crisis hurts you because it is devastating to your ego. The hurt tends to be greater when one gets a sense of identity and self-esteem from his or her job title, status, and income. A crisis hurts your family because they must experience the emotional fallout that follows a crisis. Your family may also experience a feeling of lost self-esteem and status, especially if you were fired or laid off. The Flashback Effect A major loss like this sometimes can cause you to reach back into the past and reactivate unfinished business from a major loss, or a crisis from an earlier time. For example, when Sharon was terminated after seven months at her dream job, she became very depressed. While depression is a normal reaction to such a loss, Sharon was reacting to losing her job and the similar feelings she had when she flunked out of a top university 12 years earlier. When she finally saw a therapist after a few weeks of depression following the job loss, she saw that she had never fully resolved her feelings about failing in college. Here are some other points about recovery: 1. The process of recovering from a career crisis will happen on its own schedule. It cant be rushed. 2. Every person responds to a career crisis differently. There is no right way to respond or to deal with it. 3. Depending on the circumstances, processing a career crisis can take years. 4. Build and use a support system. People need other people when they are experiencing such a crisis. A group of people who have experienced similar losses is especially helpful. 5. It is a good idea to find support outside of your family and friends. Even the most supportive may grow tired of hearing about your situation, or you may find yourself censoring your behavior to avoid alienating them. However, you still need help and a place to let your feelings out. How to Help Someone in a Career Crisis Here are a few ideas for being helpful to people going through career crises: 1. People need support when they are having a career crisis, even though they may seem to push you away. 2. Ask how you can help. 3. Dont give advice unless asked. 4. Check in regularly with the crisis victim; let him or her know youre there. 5. Remind the crisis victim of what a good person he or she is, even without the identity and status that the job provided. 6. Sometimes a career crisis sends a person into a serious depression for which help is needed. If you sense danger, urge the crisis victim to seek help. How to Turn a Crisis into a Victory Here are some suggestions for turning a career crisis into a victory: 1. Give yourself time to heal. If recovery is rushed or interrupted, the crisis victim will not fully heal and a victory is not possible. 2. Remind yourself as often as necessary that your pain will end and you will eventually feel happy again. 3. Avoid jumping into something new on the rebound; let yourself experience all the stages of grief. 4. Accept that many people will not understand the depth of your grief. They will not understand why this is so difficult for you, and they will say stupid things. 5. Use the opportunity to stop and consider other options. 6. Explore what meaning your feelings have for you. If we pay attention to them, our feelings can lead us places we would otherwise never visit. 7. Keep a journal of your experiences. Make it your intention to see what there is to be learned from this experience. 8. A loss such as a career crisis can be viewed as both a door-closer and a door-opener. Start thinking about what you are learning and gaining from this experience. 9. Create a ceremony of letting go. Yours will be as unique as your experience. The Career Crisis Recovery Exercise Write out your answers to the following questions. This self-help exercise can help you process your feelings about what has happened to you. 1. Describe what happened when your career crisis happened. 2. Describe the job or career. Where did you work? What was it like? Who did you work with? What do you miss the most? What do you not miss at all? 3. Describe your feelings about the loss of the job or career. 4. What has the impact of this crisis been on your life? What else have you lost because of your career crisis? 5. What barriers stop you from moving on? 6. What are 10 things you can do starting today to continue the recovery process? It’s Almost Midnight! Do You Know Where Your Profitable Customers Are?

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Jim Deyo Do you have any idea how much your customers are actually worth to you? Do you know which ones you make money on and the financial impact of those that beat you up over price, service levels and “extras?” Or, do you say things like “we don’t have the time to figure that out,” - or, “we are different,” - or, “how would knowing that really help us” - etc, etc? What could be more relevant to any small business than having at least a basic understanding of customer profitability? Usually when a company looks honestly at its customers, the realization jumps off the page that you make a lot of money from some customers, you make less on another group, and you probably lose money on some. When you think in terms of the factors that drive this in your company, you can begin to take steps to make sure you retain the profitable ones and not spend too much of your time on the others. There are several ways to look at customer profitability, but one of the best is to think in terms of the lifetime value of an individual customer. Lifetime customer value (LCV) is the amount of profit that you will realize from an individual customer over the time that that customer does business with you. Focusing on LCV gets you two things. First, it measures the profitability of your customers, not just the revenue, and, because there can be a big difference in margin and costs between customers, the amount of money you make can be very different. Second, LCV focuses on your overall, long-term relationship with customers, not recent transactions, and over time some relationships have the potential to be a lot more valuable than others. The challenge, of course, is that when you start thinking about how to implement this concept, you quickly realize that it can be expensive and time consuming to collect the information you need to really impact your bottom line. But, what if you could get “80%” of the benefit of knowing the LCV of your customers for “20%” of the investment? Wouldn’t you be willing to spend a few hours and maybe do a little tracking and forecasting, if it would make you more profitable? Here are some things you can do. Start by creating a list of characteristics that describe both your ideal customers and your less than ideal customers. The objective is to identify both the quantifiable and the intangible factors that influence the profitability of an individual customer. For example, a long time customer, or a customer that makes multiple purchases, is better than a new one, for the obvious reason that it gives you a bigger revenue stream and the not so obvious reason that it doesn’t cost you as much to market, sell to, and service that customer. A customer that has been in business for awhile, or buys higher margin products, or refers other business to you, or who you can use as a reference is a lot more valuable to you than one who is always pushing you on price, or takes up a lot of your time, or who requires that you stock inventory that you otherwise wouldn’t, or who is just generally difficult to deal with. The more that you can quantify in describing these customers the better; but the intangibles are important, too, because there are hidden costs involved. Then divide customers into 3, or 4 revenue groups. You can refine this later, if you want to, but you need a starting point. One place to begin is some combination of number of purchases, average sale amount, or total sales per customer. Looking at number and dollars of sales splits your customer base either by revenue (dollars), or activity (number). These are two of the important things that drive profitability. Sometimes a better place to start, if you have the information, would be 3, or 4 divisions based on gross profit margin, or some other key profit driver. If you don’t know gross profit margin by customer, you could divide your customer base by number, or dollars of sales, look at the margin for a few representative customers in each group, and make some assumptions about the margin for the entire group. The value of an initial division by gross profit margin is that you have already made a big profitability distinction in grouping your customers. Finally, look at your expenses a little differently and break them into 4 categories. These 4 expense categories are cost of goods sold (the cost of making or buying the product you sell), sales and marketing (the cost to get and keep your customers), fulfillment (the cost to deliver your product to customers), and general and admin (everything else). A few assumptions have to be made here and in some cases you might have to split an expense between more than one of the four categories. But, once you’ve done this, you can look at your expenses in a different way - i.e. how they are affected by individual customer transactions. In restating expenses and matching them to the revenue groups, keep in mind several things that can meaningfully impact the profitability of any customer group and ultimately the total profit of your business. The number of customers in each group is important, because some of your expenses will be related to this. For example, shipping and handling is partly driven by the number of customers that you ship to. The number of new, versus repeat buyers is key, because you really don’t need to spread as much sales and marketing expense to the “old” customers as you are to the “new” ones. There may be costs related to a particular group for sales and marketing, or fulfillment. Fixed, versus variable costs are important, because you benefit from spreading fixed costs over as many customers as possible, while variable costs can rise or fall based on the number of customers that you service. And, finally, don’t neglect to consider time you and you staff have to spend servicing customers. Salary expenses are fixed in total (at least in the short term), but the amount of time that a customer demands can vary greatly and in that sense can be “hidden” costs as you look at the profitability of any customer. If you are so inclined, you can bring these assumptions together in a financial model that lets you forecast LCV with some precision. But, consider what you have learned already by taking these few steps. You’re recognizing in a more focused, analytical way, that not all customers are the same. You see more clearly that the amount of sales to a customer is not all that matters. The margin is a lot higher for some customers that for others. Your company’s expenses take on a different meaning, because they now generally reflect what it costs you to get, keep, and service your customers. You’re thinking in terms of some of the key factors that impact the profitability of any of your customers. If you stop here, you have spent a few hours of your time, but you still have benefited from understanding more about how much you might make, or lose, from different groups of customers. (There are two Business Management Tools on the Business Advisor Online site that will help you easily gain a financial perspective on the Lifetime Customer Value of your customers. The Simple Calculation LCV Model provides a high level calculation; it does not require you to have collected detailed customer information, but will still give you a reasonable LCV estimate. The Detailed Calculation LCV Model lets you include more information in the calculation and helps to estimate expenses in the four categories outlined in this weeks feature article.) Go Online to Find Your Soul Mate

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Vic Bilson Everyone dreams of finding the perfect soul mate who has all the traits they want in his or her partner. One good place to begin your search is Christian online dating sites. These online dating sites help you to find someone with common interests as your own and you’ll find a large number of people from which to choose. These sites are safe and you can feel comfortable meeting the right people who share the same basic Christian principles as yourself. This is particularly helpful as compared to a regular date, where you generally know absolutely nothing about the person you have started dating. Benefits Of Dating Online Online Christian dating sites provide a safe and healthy place to exchange ideas between two people, before they actually meet. A healthy relationship between two people gives each person in the relationship the feeling of being special and being liked by somebody. This leads also to improved confidence in other areas of life. Dating a person from your own faith gives you strength to do things, within your framework of values. A like-minded person acts as your support when you feel burdened under the pressure of things happening around you. Conversely, dating a non-Christian will increase the chances of your neglecting basic Christian values and wandering away from your faith. Secure And Relaxed Setting On-line Christian dating sites offer protected and comfortable surroundings to meet and get to know new people. Here you get the chance to meet someone, determine whether they hold the same values as you, and then become friends. Oftentimes, the people you meet online will remain your friends all your life. As the friendship develops over time, you may just discover the person is your perfect soul mate. Endless Choice Christian dating sites offer an enormous choice of people when seeking a new friend or partner. Since others on a Christian dating site will be more likely to share your beliefs and values, you can be sure of finding someone who shares your religious beliefs as well as your tastes. You can also choose your friends according to your preference of lifestyle and profession. Things to Look For on an Online Christian Dating Site The ideal dating web site will have a few or all of the following features: * Chat rooms are where interesting conversations can take place and can provide a perfect medium to get to know the other person better, without actually meeting them. * Eventually, you’ll want to be able to send mails to the personal email id of the other person. * The ability of sending voice messages can also be a benefit and is available on some of these sites. * Sharing pictures with your online friends by posting them in a picture gallery can also foster getting to know one another better. * And, a site that offers online matchmaking can be a huge benefit to you. A Few More Important Guidelines to Consider Most Christian dating sites have a very strict privacy policy and will professionally maintain the privacy and security of the information provided by their customers. When you first start using an online dating site it’s important to maintain your anonymity. Although the dating sites do not revel your identity to other members, eventually you will get in touch with others and exchange personal information. You’d be advised to first exchange more general information with the person, as you take the time to form an opinion about them. Exchanging your contact details or personal details should wait for a later time. When you finally feel comfortable to share your personal information with the other person, make sure they also reveal as much about themselves. Since meeting is typically the next step in a relationship like this, pressure will start building for you to meet. However, don’t feel pressurized or jump to any conclusions. You want to spend enough time talking or exchanging e-mails until you feel comfortable with your choice. When you do finally meet for the first time, it’s prudent to meet at a public place for the first few meetings. A coffee shop, a restaurant, a mall or busy market are a few ideal spots for meeting for your first dates. You may even want to have a close friend accompany you on your very first meeting. Before your first meeting, be sure to leave the details of your meeting, such as place and time of meeting, with a friend or family member. Having your own vehicle also helps to avoid unpleasant or uncomfortable situations. Throughout the process from initial contact to personal meeting, always pay attention and heed any alarming signals you receive. For example, if you feel that the other person is avoiding certain questions, that might be a signal to stay away. When you do meet, does the person live up to the details they gave you before? How is the person’s behavior when you meet? As a Christian, you wouldn’t approve of your partner making any physical advances, for instance. If you observe behavior and gestures that seem rude, you should heed this as a warning and stay away from that person in future. So, if you want to stay away from the partying and clubbing scene, then a Christian dating site might be for you. Christian dating sites are the ideal place to find a large number of like-minded people, having similar interests and hobbies as you. Pay attention to the advice given here and you’ll have more pleasant and fulfilling dating experiences. You can enjoy the fun of dating while at the same time seek your soul mate. Vic Bilson writes about a variety of subjects including Christian Dating. You’re invited to visit Best Single Dating for more articles and advice about dating online.
